Info: as you notice from the illustration, it is a traditional cake related with religious practice. According to the Greek orthodox belief, if one person loses something important or s/he needs health or lover, one cooks fanouropita and serves to 12 people in a church to dedicate Saint Fanourios. The saint and cake worship is practiced in Crete, Rhodos and Cyprus...according the information that I collected by internet. The saint is represented many times as a sober and discreet character holding always a big candle probably to enlight what is invisible and help to the humans find what they need. In Izmir (Smyrni for Greek readers) there is the practice "aceleci bacı" (hasty sister) which has similar features. In that case, a person makes a helva, again a dessert, makes a wishes, prays and shares it with the neighbours. I hope one reader will make me a fanouropita one day, I am so curious!
