Nea Paralias Autumn 2015

Illustration for the song page. Medium: ink and watercolour
Info: Poios eimai ego [Ποιος είμαι εγώ] by Mixalis Xadzigiannis. A strong lyrics and melody concerning deception and the compassion of a person towards to her/his lover.
Illustration for the receipt page. Medium: ink and watercolour
Info: as you notice from the illustration, it is a traditional cake related with religious practice. According to the Greek orthodox belief, if one person loses something important or s/he needs health or lover, one cooks fanouropita and serves to 12 people in a church to dedicate Saint Fanourios. The saint and cake worship is practiced in Crete, Rhodos and Cyprus...according the information that I collected by internet. The saint is represented many times as a sober and discreet character holding always a big candle probably to enlight what is invisible and help to the humans find what they need. In Izmir (Smyrni for Greek readers) there is the practice "aceleci bacı" (hasty sister) which has similar features. In that case, a person makes a helva, again a dessert, makes a wishes, prays and shares it with the neighbours. I hope one reader will make me a fanouropita one day, I am so curious!

Memories

Collage, pencil and oil pastel. (42 x 29 cm.)
Personal comment: My first collage combining pencil and oil pastel techniques. I adopted a little the paper-cut technique of Matisse while I painted some papers and cut with the form of flower and seaweed. The content is about a teenage guy who looks through the door of roof floor of the house that he spent the summers of his childhood. While he looks to the landscape he evocates his memories. Interior which becomes colourful with the recalling of many memories is distinguished by the 'outside' which was abstracted by the monochrome texture of the pencil. The first plan of 'outside' gives a scene from Alice in Wonderland which supports the content to the childhood and dreamy atmosphere of the composition. The anthropomorphic fishes and seaweeds at the foreground represent the subconscious; always there but deep behind of interaction of the moment. In the composition regarding to the interaction of landscape and teenager, they seem to play main role. However, the subconscious characters are waved bottom and first plan to highlight their existence.

La Salle de Bain

Cover (above), Interior (below) / Medium: Ink and watercolour
Wedding gift for my friends Liang & Arnaud. They got married Saturday 27th of June 2015 in Toulouse. They hosted me very well during the wedding weekend. The gift was for their bathroom to evocate their fantasies giving reference to French and Chinese cultures. I aim to give a prosperity to their house and refresh their "la flamme d'amour". Lastly, I saw that they put that erotic fairy tale illustration to their office... Although the concept was water and air, who knows maybe they need some water and air while they work? ;)

My congratulations again to the recently married couple Liang Pan & Arnaud Bottin. Let say in Turkish: "Allah bir yastıkta kocatsın evlaaadım!" :)

Nea Paralias Summer 2015

Illustration for the humour page. Medium: ink and watercolour
Synopsis: an entire classroom of dummies doesn't answer where America is. One answers and becomes the "explorator".
Illustration for the song page. Medium: ink and watercolour
Info: the visual interpretation of the song "Πέντε πέντε δέκα (Βάρκα στο γιαλό)" by Mikis Theodorakis (1964) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DOcleY7LViM
Personal comment: I loved listening to this song many times. It diffuses the naive and joyful ambiance of a sunny day somewhere in Aegean Sea. While I was listening to the song, I evocated a scene that I was going to picknick with a group of friends in the forest and leaving together to the seaside with an old volkwagen van. Such a shiny, light, innocent music which leads me also to have nostalgia absorbing me to a melancholy. Thank you Theodorakis!

Open the Doors 2

EN- An illustration with "Open the Doors" title. In the illustration while an elf character is floating between the colourful clouds and holding a pocket watch, he says in Dutch "Open de deur in uw hurt voor de illustratie" (open a door in your heart for the illustration) The illustration is made on a thick and high quality watercolour paper and the strap consists of a burgundy ribbon. You may not only hand on your room's door handle, but also hang on your window to express yourself, or you may stick backside of your car.

TR- "Open the Doors!"
